Since 2016, Li-Huei Tsai's lab at MIT has studied what happens when the brain is driven at 40Hz with combined light and sound — work that moved gamma stimulation from a niche question to one of the most closely watched lines of research in neuroscience.
In mouse models, their studies report improved learning and memory measures and increased clearance of amyloid — the molecular waste associated with Alzheimer's — moving out of brain tissue in rhythm with the 40Hz stimulus.
