What is a binaural beat?
Two slightly different tones — one per ear. Your brain detects the difference and produces a third tone that doesn't physically exist. An auditory illusion with measurable neurological effects, first documented by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839.
Why 40 Hz?
40Hz sits inside the Gamma band (30–100Hz) — the range EEG research associates with attention and with the binding of sensory information into a single percept. Fast, precise, awake.
What happens in the brain?
The brain tends to lean toward the frequency it perceives — a process called neural entrainment. Studies report shifts toward the perceived frequency in some listeners, while the sound plays. If it lands for you, attention narrows onto the one task in front of you.
Can it help with focus?
Some studies say yes, carefully. Colzato, Barone, Sellaro & Hommel (2017, Experimental Brain Research) reported more focused attention under 40Hz binaural beats. Reedijk, Bolders & Hommel (2013, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience) found effects on divergent thinking only for some participants. A meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay, Santed & Reales (2019, Psychological Research) found small overall effects on attention. The evidence for focus is weaker than the evidence for anxiety — treat this session as an experiment with your own attention, not a guarantee.

Since 2016, Li-Huei Tsai's lab at MIT has studied what happens when the brain is driven at 40Hz with combined light and sound — work that moved gamma stimulation from a niche question to one of the most closely watched lines of research in neuroscience.

In mouse models, their studies report improved learning and memory measures and increased clearance of amyloid — the molecular waste associated with Alzheimer's — moving out of brain tissue in rhythm with the 40Hz stimulus. Their research overview includes a visualization of that clearance; early human trials are underway.
