Alpha waves (8–13 Hz) — what they are and what the research actually shows
What the band is
Alpha runs roughly 8 to 13 Hz and is the best known of the EEG bands, because it is the one that is easiest to see. It rises when a relaxed person closes their eyes and drops again when they open them — a change clear enough that Hans Berger described it in the first published human EEG recording (Berger, 1929, Archiv für Psychiatrie und Nervenkrankheiten). It is strongest over the back of the head, where the visual cortex is.
What research associates with it
The meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay, Santed and Reales (2019, Psychological Research) found the most consistent effect of binaural beats across studies was a reduction in anxiety, with weaker and less consistent findings for memory and attention. That is the clearest reason ECHO.11's alpha session is framed around calm rather than around focus.
Alpha is often described as an idling rhythm, but it has also been argued to reflect active inhibition — the brain suppressing input it does not need rather than doing nothing. Which description is right changes what a rise in alpha would mean.
Alpha-band responses to rhythmic auditory stimulation have been measured, but the size and durability of any shift, and whether it outlasts the sound, are not settled.
What it is not
Alpha is not a measure of how relaxed you are. Two people can feel equally calm and produce very different amounts of it, and some people produce very little alpha at all under any condition. An audio session that does nothing visible for you is not a failure on your part.
It is also not a treatment for an anxiety disorder. The research describes group-level changes in anxiety scores, not a clinical effect on a diagnosis. If anxiety is disrupting your life, that belongs with a professional; a session can sit alongside that work, not in place of it.
