What the band is

Beta covers roughly 13 to 30 Hz and is what an ordinary awake, alert, thinking adult produces most of the time. It is prominent over the sensorimotor areas, where it has a well-studied relationship with movement: beta drops as a movement is prepared and executed, and rebounds afterwards.

What research associates with it

Sensorimotor beta is one of the more reliable EEG phenomena, precisely because it is tied to an observable event — a movement — rather than to a self-reported state.

Elevated beta has been reported in anxious states, which is awkward for any product that sells beta as the frequency of productivity.

There is no good evidence that listening to a beta-frequency tone makes a person more productive. The band is a correlate of being awake and engaged, and being awake is not something a tone supplies.

What it is not

Beta is not a focus dial, and more of it is not better. It is the background rhythm of being awake; you are producing it while you read this. Framing it as a state to reach is like selling someone their own pulse.

ECHO.11 has no beta session, and that is deliberate. Building one would mean claiming an effect the evidence does not support.
