What the band is

Theta runs roughly 4 to 8 Hz, between delta and alpha. In adults it shows up in drowsiness, in the drift just before sleep, and in some meditative states. It is also recorded from the hippocampus during certain kinds of movement and learning, though hippocampal theta and scalp theta are not the same measurement and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What research associates with it

Theta activity recorded over frontal midline sites has been associated with sustained attention and with working-memory load, which is the opposite of the drowsiness association and shows the band does not map onto one mental state.

Hippocampal theta has a long literature in rodent spatial navigation and memory encoding. Extending it to what a human hears through headphones is an inference, not a finding.

In the meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay, Santed and Reales (2019, Psychological Research), the effect binaural beats showed most consistently was on anxiety, with a much less consistent picture for memory and attention. That caution applies to theta as much as to any other band.

What it is not

Theta is not a shortcut to a meditative state, and it is not a creativity switch. The band appears both when someone is drifting toward sleep and when someone is concentrating hard, which is a good reason to distrust any description that assigns it a single feeling.

It is also not evidence of anything mystical. Theta is a frequency range in a voltage recording. What it means depends entirely on where it was recorded, when, and in whom.
